Clinic for Thoracic Surgery

The Clinic for Thoracic Surgery is the largest thoracic surgical institution in Serbia and Southeast Europe in terms of capacity and the number of surgeries performed annually.

It has 64 patient beds, of which 11 are located in the intensive care unit. Annually, approximately 1,400 thoracic surgical procedures are performed at the Clinic under general anesthesia and about 400 under local anesthesia. Since its establishment, nearly 50,000 surgeries have been conducted at the Clinic. Two operating rooms are equipped to the highest technical standards, including 4K (UHD) video equipment for minimally invasive surgery and all types of surgical devices such as ENERGY DEVICES (Ligasure, Ultrascision, Argon Plasma Coagulation, Radio Frequency Ablation, cryoanalgesia and cryosurgery devices). The intensive care unit is equipped with high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and hemodiafiltration.
At the Clinic for Thoracic Surgery of the Institute for Lung Diseases of Vojvodina, there are currently 6 specialists in thoracic surgery, seven anesthesiologists, three thoracic surgery residents, and one anesthesiology resident. A complete surgical program in thoracic surgery is conducted, which includes surgery of the trachea and major airways, lung surgery, pleura, mediastinum, chest wall, esophagus and diaphragm, thyroid and parathyroid glands, and chest trauma.

Bronchoplastic reconstructive surgeries were introduced into everyday practice 40 years ago, and angioplastic reconstructive surgeries 20 years ago. The minimally invasive VATS method (Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery) was introduced in Sremska Kamenica in 1996, more than 10 years before other institutions in the country. The first VATS lobectomy in Serbia was performed in Sremska Kamenica in 2007, VATS thymectomy in 2007, and the number of VATS anatomical lung resections (lobectomies, pneumonectomies, and segmentectomies) is greater each year than in all other institutions in Serbia combined – in 2025, there were 250 surgeries.

The Clinic for Thoracic Surgery is organizationally composed of the following departments:

Department of General Pulmonary Surgery
